Last week, Rep. Tom Cole (R., Okla.) told a group of Republican supporters: "If George Bush loses the election, Osama bin Laden wins the election, it's that simple. It will be interpreted that way by enemies of the United States around the world." The implication that electing John Kerry would aid America's enemies is an emotionally loaded cheap shot that undermines debate about national security.
In a recent, highly publicized report accusing the Bush administration of "misuse of science," the Union of Concerned Scientists lists dozens of examples of supposed suppression or distortion of scientific research and inappropriate influence on federal appointments. Many of them, however, reflect little more that partisan disagreement or reliance on a single person's interpretation.
